about

Fifth movement, introducing boron. Boron has five protons and electrons. Two are at a lower energy state than the other three, so the introductory notes are of two lower pitches and three higher pitches. These three electrons are called the valence electrons, as they are in the outermost shell of the atom, and can each participate in a bond so that three other atoms can bond to the boron atom. Boron leads a double life, however. It can also share all five of its electrons to make bonds to five other atoms. For this reason, three beats per measure in the first four measures is followed by a rhythm of five beats per measure for two measures. This pattern is repeated throughout the movement.
